We certainly have come a long way since the days of DOS and Windows 3.1 (I was there typing out every single command and playing CLI games. Painful, I know.) Since then we’ve graduated to beautiful GUI’s and ease of access for the technologically disabled comparable to wheelchair ramps for the physically disabled.
My favourite browser, as you may or may not know, is Opera. I’ve experimented with Firefox, IE, Netscape, Flock, and Konqueror and none of them have come close. Here’s a few of my favourite features of Opera.
Mouse gestures:
Hold down the right mouse button and you’re off. Drag the mouse to the left and release the button and you’ll go back a page. Drag to the right and you’ll go forward. Drag it down and you’ll create a brand spankin’ new tab. Want to refresh your page? Simply move the mouse up then down and release the right mouse button. Sweet, I know. And since I just opened up a new tab really easily, I’ll segue into this next awesome feature.
The Speed Dial:
Whenever you create a new tab or page, this handy little page pops up. You have room for nine of your favourite websites which you add by clicking on the blank slots and filling in with their URL. Goddamn it’s handy! No more looking through your bookmarks or typing the address in manually.
The searches:
There are a couple of ways to go about searching through your favourite websites. I’ll start with creating the search. Thesaurus.com is a good example and I know it’ll please at least one of my friends. First we open up the website then move the cursor to the search box. Right click then select Create Search.
It’ll ask you what keyword you want to name it. I’ve chosen t. NOW whenever I go into the address bar and type t Hello world, it will search for Hello world. See:
Voila!
While we’re on the subject of searches, once one is created you can click View —> Toolbars —> Personal Bar to show your personal bar. Once it’s there you right-click —> Show searches –> Thesaurus.com. Now it’s right there for all your synonym searching needs.
And FYI, I made a lot of these captures using the Windows Vista Snipping Tool. You can find it in your Accessories folder if you’re using Vista. It’s quite possibly the greatest invention ever.
D’accord. That’s all for now. I hope you’ll all consider using Opera instead of IE or Firefox or whatever junk you’re currently browsing on. PEACE.
P.S. I totally bombed my networking exam. Good thing I didn’t need a good mark to pass the course. =D
